As being president of my high school FFA chapter I noticed that in a way I am a leader to the underclassmen. When we have chapter meetings the freshmen always ask me questions about the activities we will be having later in the year or upcoming ones. I don’t mind them asking because it makes me happy knowing they want to be involved with everything. After they heard about the Tulare County Fair I went to they want to go to fairs now too. Soon we are going to have a meeting to talk about Porterville Fair and one freshmen already asked me to help them with their project. Knowing that I am a role model to them feels great because it means I’m influencing someone in doing something good.
I want to say that my greatest talent or skill would have to be showing my market animals at fairs. This took lots of practice and help from my teacher and close friend. I remember the first time having an animal; I worked hard with him I wanted to do good at fair. At that fair I didn’t do as well as I wanted but my teacher said I did a great job for my first time. Back in September this year I went again to that fair and I was close in getting Reserve Champion Market Sheep. Knowing that I was close makes me feel accomplished that working hard pays off in the end. This skill that I do takes a lot of my time, I come feed in the mornings and nights everyday while in between I work with my lamb. I do make time with getting my school work done, and spending time with my family and friends.
A challenge that I have faced in my life happened my sophomore year. It was my math class which was algebra 1. Math doesn’t like me and I certainly don’t like it either that’s why I struggled with it. My teacher was an outstanding math teacher, but the students didn’t let him teach during class. It was hard to learn when some of the students would talk and not pay attention to him. As time went by he would be giving assignments out and I would try to do them but I didn’t understand it. I know I could've told him that I needed help with my homework, I just didn’t realize it. When the first semester was almost I started to stay after school to get my work done. I manage to finish three measurement topics before the semester was over which is pretty good. During the second semester I did my work and if I needed help I would ask my teacher. By the end of the year I passed algebra 1 with a level three. I was proud of myself that I actually pushed myself to get it done on time.
What I have done to make my school or community a better place is fixing up the agriculture greenhouse. The greenhouse hasn’t been used in a long time and we need to use it for my horticulture class that I am in. Right now the greenhouse isn’t in the greatest condition so over Christmas break some of my friends and I will be coming in to clean up the area. As we took a look at it we knew this was going to be a lot of hard work and we didn’t mind it at all we want to do it. The reason why we are doing this is because we need to use it for our class, but also it just breaks our hearts on how it looks. Once the greenhouse is clean we will be ready to sell to our community. We will be having different varieties of flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables.
